Dear beloved in the Lord, Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
In the course of a years time we have suffered the loss of three members of our little parish; Paul Pishal and Sophia Borisovna Cheremeteva reposed last Summer, and Bruce Gherman Goodsell who reposed suddenly this past Spring. All three of them contributed greatly to the establishment and history of our community.
Sophie was a remarkable woman, of old Russian aristocracy, and a princess according to her lineage. She was raised in exile and learned much of the world during her youth. She inspired us with her stories and dazzled many with her artistic talents. Her egg pendants and pysanky will be her legacy, as will her heartfelt warmth as she often opened her home for a Yolka celebration during our early days.
Paul was a true son of the Ukrainian heartland and proud of his heritage. He suffered as a believer early on in life and was subjected to ridicule in school. He was imprisoned during the Second World War and eventually made his way to America. He served as “grandfather” to the children in our parish. During his ongoing battle with cancer he often managed to pick up a broom and sweep or clean during the many work parties while construction went on.
Bruce was a man of many talents and gifts. His heritage was typical New England, and his family background was the “stuff” that makes this nation great. Little did he think after his first visit to our parish four years ago that he would stay and never leave. His wood craftsmanship was the finest, and his work can be seen throughout the building and outside as well. Every time the bells are rung we will be reminded of his zeal. He was received into Orthodoxy at Transfiguration, and without a doubt, his coming to the Faith transformed his outlook on everything in life.
We would like to make a memorial tribute in their names.
An opportunity has risen. The craftsman, who made the cupola and cross for the Optina Elders Chapel, has offered his services once again to our church. We would like to add the cupolas above the portico, as the design plans indicate, which will further add beauty to our parish center. The cost of the three cupola assemblies will total $ 5000.
It is our hope that, despite the economic difficulties being felt by us all, we might together gather the funds needed to honor these members of our community.
If you wish to make a donation for this purpose please submit them to Peter Clegg our parish secretary. Checks should be made payable to “Holy New Martyrs Church”. They will be deposited into the memorial account for this specific purpose.
May God bless our efforts to further glorify His Name and beautify His Holy Church. Thank you all for your kind and prayerful consideration of this request.
With love in Christ,
Father Basil Grisel
